July 4th Family Safety Tips

Keep Your Family Safe this 4th of July!

Cookouts, lounging poolside, playing in the sand, and for those of you bold enough, backyard fireworks, are all hallmarks of the 4th of July. All of this celebration can be a great way for your family to relax and bond, but taking safety considerations under advisement this time of year is recommended.

Heat Safety Tips

  • Loose, lightweight clothing in light colors is best for kids who will be playing in the hot sun.
  • Instead of scheduling outdoor activities for the middle of the day, when the sun is the highest in the sky, spend time outside in the morning and evening hours.
  • Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and reapply after your kids go into the water.
  • Keep your kids hydrated by offering them water, or even popsicles, frequently throughout the day.

Grilling Safety Tips

  • Keep your grill away from low-hanging branches, bushes, or overgrown brush in order to avoid a fire.
  • Keep children and pets are kept away from the grill area.
  • Buy a grill brush and clean the grill every time you use it to avoid a grease fire.
  • Never leave your grill unattended, especially if kids are nearby.

Firework Safety Tips

  • Do not allow young children to handle fireworks, including sparklers. Older children should be taught not to run while holding sparklers, or wave them.
  • Keep a container of water nearby to douse flames from a potential fire.
  • After you’ve used a firework, soak it thoroughly in water and dispose in an outdoor garbage can.

Swim Safety Tips

  • Not a confident swimmer? Take a few lessons to brush up in order to boost your confidence when swimming with your kids.
  • Keep an eye on all of your kids when they’re in the water, and even watch non-swimmers who are playing poolside or in the shallow water.
  • Teach your kids about water safety. Ask them to pay attention to pool rules, including not running by the side of the pool, and never diving into areas not marked for diving.
  • Purchase proper flotation devices for non-swimmers, and remember that all kids should wear flotation devices when aboard a boat.
